WE CAN SOLVE THE CLIMATE CRISIS
Dear TUNEINTURNONHELPOUT MEMBERS,
Last week, Exxon Mobil announced record profits — at the same time that the rest of us were paying record high prices at the gas pump.It doesn’t need to be this way. Our energy prices don’t need to be this high.a fun quiz to help show the way. How well do you know America’s energy? You might find the answers surprising!Find out. www.wecansolveit.org

If we repower America and generate 100% of our electricity from clean sources within ten years, we can bring our energy costs down.

A lot of people are surprised when they find out how quickly we can make this transition. We’ve built

We can start relying on fuels that are free and abundant right here at home. Fuels like the sun and wind. Once our electricity grid is based on clean sources, we can plug in our cars, use those free energy sources, and stop paying through the nose to the oil companies.

On the day Exxon announced its record profits, I testified before the U.S. Congress. I explained that there are no technical or material impediments to achieving the goal of 100% clean electricity within ten years. The only thing missing is political will. And that’s why the We Campaign exists — to build support for solutions that can revitalize our economy and solve the climate crisis.

The average score of people who’ve taken the quiz is 63% Can you beat that?

Sincerely,
Cathy Zoi
CEO

Dear friends,

On Wednesday, we’ll hand our climate petition to the prime minister of Japan — the chair of the powerful G8 summit. Join the call for climate action now!

Click to Sign Now!

Last year, the world seemed to wake up to climate change.

This year, it’s falling back asleep.

Two weeks of global climate negotiations have just wrapped up — with no real progress. The rich nations are the culprits, refusing to take the lead and commit to emissions cuts that will bring the rest of the world onboard.[1]

Our best hope: within weeks, those rich country leaders will gather at the G8 summit chaired by Japan. If Japan’s Prime Minister offers bold leadership, the G8 summit could be a breakthrough. But, so far, he is pushing in the wrong direction.[2]

So it’s up to us. Next Wednesday, June 18, we will hand-deliver our new climate petition to Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. If we can muster 250,000 voices in a few short days, we can sound a global alarm on climate that Fukuda and the other G8 leaders cannot ignore. Sign the petition and forward this message to friends:

We’ve already shown that a global public outcry on climate change can move Fukuda’s policy. Asahi Shimbun, Japan’s second-largest newspaper, told the story in a lengthy article this January. At a critical, high-level meeting on global warming after the UN negotiations in Bali, the Environment Minister reportedly held up Avaaz’s “Titanic” newspaper ad — showing Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda, with Bush, steering towards climate disaster… along with a call for tough 2020 emissions targets, signed by 90,000 Avaaz members.

“The world sees Japan as a force resisting change! Are we okay with this?” the minister reportedly asked. The Chief Cabinet Minister suggested setting a target. Days later, after having steadfastly resisted the idea at Bali, Prime Minister Fukuda announced his decision: Japan would, indeed set a 2020 emissions target.[3]

Now, five months on, Fukuda has indeed laid out a target — but it falls far short of what scientists say is necessary to avert a climate catastrophe.

This year’s G8 summit will begin on the same day as the Tanabata festival, when citizens write their wishes on pieces of paper and hang them from bamboo trees. [4] This Wednesday, let’s send the biggest-ever Tanabata wish: for a climate change treaty strong enough to save the planet.

Sign the petition here, and spread the word:

People created the climate crisis. If we join together, people power can end it.

With hope,

O.k. kids this one is almost too good to be true! Every now and then we find something really special around here (and in fact it happens more often than not - one of the perks of the job!) and this is one of those lucky occasions. If you’ve been itching to get involved and volunteer but money is an issue, which it is to so many - why is that anyway? That the people with the most money “find so little time to volunteer” but the people who are willing to take that vacation time from work and volunteer it to a worthy cause are often the ones with the least amount of money? And yes it is true, as unfortunate as it is, oftentimes volunteering DOES take some money…

But here’s a great opportunity for many of you. The organization is called WWOOF - World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. So here’s your chance. For some of you, here’s your summer! And nah we’re not even gonna charge you for finding this baby cause we love you TuneInTurnOnHelpOut people and all that you do for the world.

We just find out that our drummer Bill Sommer (from the band Transcendence) is actually leaving next week to spend an entire month on The Big Island in Hawaii working on an organic farm – and the best part is that they pay all of his room and board and food. He just has to pay his flight over there and commit to working on a farm each day. Which was his reason for the trip in the first place - he wanted to help and volunteer somewhere in the world where he was needed. As much as we will miss Bill, I would say that more than anything we are just happy for him, if not a wee bit envious!

So wow. What a concept. You get free room and board in return for working all day somewhere in the world…. usually on an organic farm. You have to purchase a guide to an area of the world that you are interested in spending some time in, then make some calls and write some letters and find a farm that you are interested in and before you know it, voila! You’re on your way to somewhere on the globe not only helping others, but also getting to see another part of the world.

We simply cannot say enough good things about this very cool and creative organization.

So here is some more information for you:

What is WWOOF?
WWOOF, a world wide network - it started in the UK in 1971, and has since become an international movement that is helping people share more sustainable ways of living.

WWOOF is an exchange - in return for volunteer help WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles.

WWOOF organizations link individuals wanting to volunteer on organic farms or smallholdings with people who are looking for volunteer help.

How does it work?
WWOOF organizations publish a list of organic farms, smallholdings and gardeners that welcome volunteer help at certain times. The diversity of hosts available offers a large variety of tasks and experiences.

Volunteer helpers (”WWOOFers”) choose the hosts that most interest them and make direct contact to arrange a stay. Volunteers usually live as part of the family.

For more information, simply visit their website and take the first step to your next big adventure! http://www.wwoof.org/

So get to it, good luck, and make it happen. And to each of you that are making a difference out there in the world for all of us, thank you!

Sincerely,
U Know Who

From those lovely ladies at CODEPINK:

Dear Friend,

We are in love with our planet. One of the reasons we work for peace is to nurture our entire planet; we want our beautiful Mother Earth to flourish. CODEPINK is one of the few groups that connect war and the environment. Pink and green are gorgeous together, don’t you think? As natural as a stem and a flower.

War is definitely not green. It is, in fact, quite the opposite. The U.S. military is the single largest consumer of oil in the world and the world’s larger polluter, generating 750,000 tons of toxic waste annually. If we stop funding the war for oil in Iraq, our tax dollars can go toward developing clean, green sources of energy that will help us build a healthy, peaceful planet.

We like to think of CODEPINK as a perennial garden; we plant seeds of love and peace that flower throughout the year–often in surprising places (did you see the parody of CODEPINK on Saturday Night Live this weekend?) Help the CODEPINK garden grow. You can spread seeds of peace by signing our War is Not Green petition and sending it along to five friends. The more people who join us, the more we can work for the Earth.

It is deeply inspiring to see what we can create when we come together. We witnessed a glorious blossoming in New Orleans, where we just planted a beautiful community garden in the still devastated Lower Ninth Ward. Click here to see pictures of the garden and photos from the phenomenal tribute to the women of New Orleans organized by V-Day–the campaign to end violence against women and girls. It was a true honor to bring love and beauty and hope to a community so desperately in need of healing.

You can plant seeds of peace in your own community by downloading our War is Not Green petition and flyer and bringing them to your local Earth Day celebrations; you can also put our War is Not Green sign in your window. We need to remind our friends and neighbors how war hurts the Earth as well as her citizens. We need to remind them that we can all stand up and nurture both peace and the environment.

Thank you for helping us spread seeds of peace throughout the world!

With love (and love for our amazing Mother Earth),
Alicia, Dana, Desiree, Farida, Gael, Gayle, Jodie, Liz, Medea, Nancy, Rae, and Tighe

P.S.

  • Gather even more seeds of peace at our Summer of Hope in DC! We will be hosting weekly activist training camps in June and July at the CODEPINK house; you and other passionate, engaged women will learn powerful and creative activism tools, and will then bring your new knowledge straight to the halls of Congress! To join us, click here.

  • Thanks to those who resisted as the filed their taxes this week and did not BUY BUSH’S WAR.
