Believe it or not, a project such as TuneInTurnOnHelpOut.org does not cost a fortune to build and maintain. This is a good thing. Especially when considering the positive impact it can have on the world around us. To build, design, host, maintain, administer, manage emails and comments, and keep the site current costs approximately $15,000 per year.
Of course there are also the man-hours and “sweat equity” involved - the actual work to post the links, blogs, and calls to action, and handle the emails and comments. “Some weeks we are lucky. We might only receive seventeen-hundred comments. That’s a good week,” Hale says. Luckily most all of this is done on a volunteer basis - except for the programming and hosting - because of the sheer passion that our small team has for this humble little project.
TuneInTurnOnHelpOut.org was started in 1998 by singer/songwriter Ed Hale from the rock group Transcendence, along with the band’s web guru G2, some hyper social and political activists, and a few generous benefactors who also believe that ‘every little action we take helps.’ The majority of the funding to keep the site running comes from either merchandise sales or small contributions from users all over the world who find the site’s content a valuable resource.
Our goal from the very beginning was to create an interactive, self-sustaining database of helpful information, links, and calls to action to assist people to continue to tune in, turn on, and help out by connecting them with causes and issues that appeal to them personally. The goal is also that the site is simple, informative, concise, easy to use, educational, and most of all FREE.
Another goal equally important to us is to NOT feature any advertising, affiliate programs, or google ad words to bring in revenue. Though from a practical viewpoint this would help defer costs, we feel that in the bigger picture it could have the potential to taint the project or jeopardize its purity. We accomplish this goal by keeping the site as simple as possible, encouraging others to help with whatever and whenever they can, and by doing as much of the work ourselves in-house.
Because the site does not sell advertising, but is a 100% percent user-funded not-for-profit project, we encourage users to donate whatever, however, and whenever they can or care to to keep it up and running and continuing to grow.
Contributions of any kind, whether money, designers, programming, work-hours, or other resources, are al welcome to help us meet our monthly and annual costs to keep the site up and running. If you feel so compelled and wish to contribute, please feel free to do so in whatever amount you can by using the Donate button below.
One can also email us for more information on the various other ways to donate at turnuson@tuneinturnonhelpout.org.
No matter how big or small, every contribution is appreciated and means the world to us and to the loyal fan base of people from all over the world to either start their search, or keep exploring different ways of giving back on this website. A project like Tune In, Turn on, Help Out is a labor of love and passion. Being in the non-profit business is not exactly a venture one takes on to become rich or wealthy. But we believe that a database that connects individuals to causes and charities that speak to them so that “more people are working to help make the world a better place” is a worthwhile cause in itself.
We are very appreciative of the community’s involvement both monetarily and in the comments and suggestions we receive everyday about making the site more streamlined, accurate, informative, and user-friendly. Thank you for being a part of it!
